Frequently asked questions
What is Idlebook?
Idlebook is a social networking site that allows UW students to rent or buy each other's textbooks in order to save money.
Another book swap site?
Idlebook offers many advantages over other book swap and sale sites; not only is renting books cheaper than buying from the bookstore or online, it’s also faster since books are located in the U-District with no time needed for shipping. Prices on Idlebook are negotiable, which means even better deals than rental sites. And by focusing only on books, we are able to offer a broader selection then other commonly used sites where a variety of goods are sold.
What about renting non-textbooks?
Yes, all books can be listed.
How much do you charge? How much does each book cost?
Students can decide on their own how much they are willing to pay or rent their books out for and then negotiate prices with other users. Usual pricing should be 25-30 percent of cover price.
Why should I pay through your system?
Using our system allows you to access the convenience of easy pick up and drop off of text books near the UW. Our system also has built in security, allowing only verified UW students to use it. Plus, the more you use our site, the more of a reputation you build on the site through ratings and reviews so that you are able to borrow freely.
Why renting?
If you are able to rent your book out a couple of times, you will make more money than you would if you were to just sell it back to the bookstore, plus you get to keep the textbook! Selling is also allowed on idlebook, which may also be more profitable than low buyback prices offered elsewhere.
How do I trust the people who borrow my book?
Once someone signs up on the site, we verify that they are a UW student with a legitimate Facebook account. We also ask for a security deposit on sign up, which we hold in case a book isn't returned to the owner. In addition, students' real names and Facebook profiles are shown when starting a trade. Book owners also have say in who they rent to, and can read reviews of borrowers before deciding to lend their books.
How do I pay?
Currently you can pay by credit card when you pick up the book, but online payment is coming soon!
What if a friend needs a book?
If you find someone you know who needs your book through our site, you can lend to them for free.
Can I sell my book?
Although we encourage renting, you may also list your book for sale.
How do I get paid?
If you received a payment, you will be notified by email and on the site. Click the "Wallet" on the top right corner of any page and then click the "Order A Check" button. We'll send a check to your current address. We encourage you to keep your credits so that you are able to rent or buy other books on Idlebook without having to pay again.
Where is the dropbox?
Books are picked up and dropped off during business hours at the Ave Copy Center, beneath Jimmy John’s.
4141 University Way NE # 103,
Seattle, WA
(206) 633-1837

What happens if a book is not returned?
Although it's highly unlikely, if a book is not returned the owner will be given the rental fee plus the renterís deposit that was made when they signed up. In addition, the renter risks their reputation on the site and will not be able to borrow books in the future.
